CANON GL2 MICROPHONE
The Canon GL2 accessory catalog lists only one external microphone for the GL series, and it's a good one. The Canon DM-50 Microphone is a directional stereo mic which connects to the Advanced Accessory Shoe. The Canon DM50 does double duty as a directional shotgun mic or as a stereo wide dispersion mic with a simple flick of a switch. No cables or additional power required. DM50 voice clarity is very clear and the windscreen is a dramatic improvement over the GL2's internal microphone. If you do outdoor shooting where wind distortion is always a major concern, the Canon EQ-GL1 Equalizer helps keep microphones dry and acoustically unaffected in windy conditions and in rain and snow.
Canon anticipated that the professional quality GL2 would demand more creative audio recording options and provides the MA-300 Microphone Adapter that connects two XLR (Cannon [two "n" - no relation] microphone jack specification) style microphones. This unobtrusive microphone adapter attaches to the camcorder's Advanced Accessory Shoe, providing power to two low-impedance microphones. Microphones up to 25mm diameter attach directly to the adapter but vibration noise is possible if not done securely. You can use the camcorder's microphone attenuator to lower the volume level or correct input audio distortion but sound quality will depend mostly on the quality of your microphone and its effective placement.

The Shure XLR-to-mini keeps all those adapters off the camera body and is a lifesaver that belongs in every videographer's accessory bag. Whether it's you or the soundman - somebody has to be wearing headphones so that you can hear everything - and only - what your GL2 is hearing. If your cabled mic is more than two steps from the audio input jack you need XLR low impedance cable to fight the hum. Depending on the mic you may also need an impedance transformer.
